Become an expedition member on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast where you will be based at the remote research station within the Tortuguero National Park. Surrounded by the amazing natural beauty of beaches and rainforest, with all transport via canoe and boat, you will be working on the adjacent canals, rivers, forest, beaches and in the nearby communities.
Gain personal training and development whilst getting immersed in the on-going conservation efforts ensuring the survival of the biodiversity of this unique area of the rainforest. Head into the tropical rainforest in Costa Rica to conduct jaguars’ population and feeding behaviour studies; monitor the number of predated sea turtles along a 15 mile beach survey; partake in seasonal marine turtle conservation of leatherbacks and hawksbills; take part in tropical species surveillance and learn to record and input the data you gathered that day, to make a difference to the on-going management of the wildlife in Tortuguero National Park.
When on base relax among your fellow team of international volunteers, share in base duties such as meal preparation and maybe visit Tortuguero Village. For longer term volunteers on long weekend breaks, you could decide to head off base and further explore the Caribbean region. Hiking, snorkelling, fishing, or canopy and zip-line tours are just some of the activities that are possible in the area. Or for the adrenaline junkies, the famous Pacuare River offers white water rafting on class III to IV rapids over the course of 1- or 2-day trips.
What you need to know
You need to be fit to take part in this expedition. It is going to be hot, wet and humid and you will be doing a lot of walking in soft sand, sometimes up to 20 miles per day.
You will undergo training and orientation upon arrival including getting to grips with Health & Safety procedures; First Aid and CPR; GPS training; camera trapping; wildlife and track identification skills and jaguar, canal birds and biological assessment project training.
Due to the remoteness of the base, weekend travel is not possible for volunteers staying less than four weeks. Those staying eight weeks or longer can take a long weekend (Saturday – Tuesday) at the end of each 4 weeks.
